What a Shelter Dog Taught Me

I have been volunteering at a local shelter for over a year now. Every Thursday morning, I walk the small dogs. I look forward to that day each week. Over the last few months, I fell for one particular dog named Logan. He was an owner surrender. HIs family was moving and left him at the shelter. I couldn’t believe anyone would give up a dog like this. But unfortunately, this is happening far too frequently right now.

Every Thursday morning when I arrived at the shelter, I was greeted by that sweet face, that happy smile and that tail that never stopped wagging. I begged the other volunteers to let me walk Logan each week. I thought I was helping him, but I’ve come to learn that he was actually helping me.

Here’s what Logan, the shelter dog, taught me:

Greet everyone with enthusiasm. Make them feel good to have met you.

Get lots of exercise, but rest in the shade when you’re tired.

Look everyone in the eye when they talk to you.

Drink lots of water on a hot day.

Roll in the grass when you feel like it.

Take the time to smell all the beauty around you.

Take a nap if you want to.

Accept kindness from others with grace.

Speak up when you need something.

Enjoy a treat from time to time.

Live in the moment.

And most importantly, treat everyone with the same level of respect.

As I write this, Logan is supposed to be picked up by his new family today. I am so happy for him, my heart is bursting. Live a beautiful life, my sweet boy and thank you for all your incredible lessons.

LOGAN

Please consider volunteering at an animal shelter. These sweet babies need you more than ever right now.
